Construction scaffolding, also known as stage or scaffolding, is a simple temporary structure utilized to support materials and a work team during the construction, repair and maintenance of public buildings, bridges and other such structures. It is designed to provide safety for workers by allowing them to be placed at a height that allows for a more even and level work load. Since most scaffolding jobs are performed on high walls, it also provides better protection against falling debris. It is made out of a variety of materials including steel and aluminum and can be assembled quickly making it an economical way to erect large structures. Scaffolds provide better stability and durability than manual scaffolding and are more versatile.

In addition to the use of scaffolding made out of steel and aluminum there is also what is known as plastic scaffolding. This type of construction scaffolding consists of pieces of pvc or acrylic plastic and are usually used on low-rise structures where weight and stability are of the utmost importance. Most of these scaffolding pieces consist of long rectangular tubes which have been welded together. The tubes are secured to wooden planks which are attached across the bottom or the middle. The entire construction scaffolding system consists of a series of these planks connected to each other via fasteners and are secured to a concrete or cement foundation.

Single scaffolding is the most basic form of scaffolding and is commonly used on smaller projects and construction works. A typical single scaffolding system consists of a platform either on wheels or on legs that can be moved around easily and are capable of being folded and stored when not in use. A single scaffolding system consists of a series of individual platforms or ‘reares’ which are lifted up by a forklift truck and which are then placed on the ground for use. Another very popular construction scaffolding system is the use of an adjustable suspension scaffold. An adjustable suspension scaffold is a simple, lightweight construction scaffolding system that makes use of rubber or canvas grommets suspend a series of platforms vertically in the air. The scaffolds are secured to the ground by using metal or polyester rope and a forklift is used to place them on the platforms. Because the scaffolds can be folded up, they take up considerably less space than many other forms of construction scaffolding. They are also highly flexible and can be reconfigured to fit any given job site.

A further variation on the construction scaffolding system is the personal fall protection or PMP. The PMP is a vital part of all Canadian construction scaffolding and is implemented as part of the Technical Standards and Safety Act (TSSA). The PMP is comprised of three elements including the actual scaffolding system, an emergency exit plan and a fall protection plan. All Canadian construction scaffolding must contain the necessary elements of the PMP in order to be classified as being used in a PMP controlled environment. This includes:

Plastic or polyethylene sheeting is the most common material used to manufacture scaffolding. Steel and aluminum scaffolds are also commonly used. A popular lightweight synthetic scaffolding material is polyurethane foam, which is resistant to most chemicals and is commonly used as scaffolding for residential projects. Aluminum and steel construction scaffolds are also commonly used by construction workers because of their durability and the fact that they require less maintenance. These scaffolds are also commonly used for light commercial projects such as warehouse buildings and assembly-line projects.

Some scaffolds are also designed with a cantilever feature, which is a piece of equipment that is mounted on the lower rung or side of the scaffold platform. A cantilever scaffolding system is commonly seen on tall buildings and commercial buildings where stability is a priority. These systems usually use steel cables to provide the lift capability, while other types of scaffolds have a single or twin cable system.

The PMP refers to the physical test procedures performed by the manufacturer and the supplier to ensure that the scaffolding meets the standards required by Canadian construction workers. Standards on construction scaffolding vary across the country, depending on the construction type and the amount of work to be done. Standards on cantilever scaffolding also differ between countries. Because of this, it is important to contact your provider to ensure that your scaffolding meets the standards of the Canadian construction workers’ manual. If this is not done, then your scaffolding will not pass the test and you won’t be able to use it for your project.
